Somewhere between 275 and 300 motorcyclists showed up today to ride for safety. This is a general call to the BC Government to wake up, smell the coffee, and put some concrete barriers in the center lane along the Malaht.

Following is a clip from CHEK TV.

This issue has been alive in the media for a week now. That’s a long LONG life in mainstream media. Government is feeling the pressure. They don’t like lingering issues.

Here’s the critical part, though. Write a snail-mail letter.

Snail mail to a minister MUST be read by the intended recipient. Email can be vetted. On-line petitions, while cute (and yes, I do sign them), are generally ignored. The BEST way to get noticed is by snail mail.

Simply state that you believe that safety on the Malahat can be significantly improved through the installation of concrete barriers dividing oncoming traffic. Sign it. Stamp it. Mail it. Send it to:

Hon. Blair Lekstrom
Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure
Room 342 – Parliament Buildings
Victoria, B.C.
V8V 1X4

It’s incredible what a small group of people can do to affect change. A go-getter by the name of Kristy Falconer was the key decision-maker and lead actioneer; a blogger using the Twitter handle Moto-Diva (aka Darlene) managed the media and various connections incredibly well. The team of instructors from the Vancouver Island Safety Council both mapped out the route and maintained general order. A committee of supporters stood behind these champions and gave what they had.

This core enabled the bigger event to unfold as beautifully as it did.

Ultimate appreciation goes out to each and every single person who came out to attend and/or support the event.

Now, let’s get our pens poised for the next step: writing letters to fellow biker, the Hon. Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

It was an amazing day, which could only have been made possible by everyone on the team. You all are amazing and here is what I have to say to Minister Lekstrom
“Can you hear me now?!”. Honorable Minister you bet get your reading glasses out and if you don’t need to wear glasses you might after you get all the letters coming your way.

Hi James, and thanks for passing along his email address.

We do prefer people snail mail hard copy. The reason for this is that MLA’s are required to view each piece of snail mail addressed to themselves. Emails, on the other hand, can be read, counted, and summarized by whatever Communications staff they have hired to do the job.

Because Blair is a biker, we believe it will speak much more personally and powerfully if letters are written, stamped and snail mailed.

Definitely do both. If you’re going to do just one thing, we urge you to write.
